Christina Applegate Thinks Married With Children Reunion Gave Her COVID

Christina Applegate is reflecting on her recent rare outing to the Married With Children reunion.

“It was at the Wiltern theater in Los Angeles. A couple thousand folk there,” Applegate, 54, said during the Tuesday, February 10, episode of her and Jamie Lynn Sigler’s “MeSsy” podcast, recalling the January 28 event titled “An Evening With the Bundys.”

“I just tried to be funny. You know me,” Applegate, who reunited with former Married With Children costars Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal and David Faustino for the live panel, continued. “Questions were asked. There was a moderator, this guy who used to do our warm-up, actually, in our audience. And it went on for, it felt like a few hours, but it wasn’t, it was probably an hour.”

The Dead to Me star added that she’s “certain” she got COVID-19 from the event because there were “so many germs” and she didn’t wear a mask.

The reunion marked a rare public appearance for Applegate amid her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), which she was diagnosed with in 2021.

Sigler, 44, asked Applegate how she felt being on stage for the first time in a while. (Applegate’s last major public appearance was at the 2024 Emmys, where she presented the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.)

“I was really tired, sweet Jamie, you know me, when the MS hits that fit, like, it was so late at night,” Applegate replied. “It didn’t start till 7:30, dude. I know you’re, like, laughing at me, but to me, that’s, like, the worst ever. … “You’re [supposed to be] in the [pajamas], and you got the stuff on … at 7:30, you’re not supposed to be in hair and makeup and in front of thousands of people answering questions.”

Applegate concluded, “I don’t know. It was great. I think that the people had fun, and it was nice to be with my family.”

Married With Children ran for 11 seasons on Fox from 1987 to 1997. The show followed the Bundy family — Al (O’Neill), Peggy (Sagal), Kelly (Applegate) and Bud (Faustino) — as they navigated life in suburban Chicago.

The reunion saw the stars sit down together to share behind-the-scenes stories and other memories from the show, according to Extra. Applegate appeared to be in good spirits as she bantered with her former castmates.

Applegate offered an update on her health during the panel, telling the audience that MS can “suck a d***” but adding that the energy in the room gave her a sense of hope. She also revealed that she was doing “OK” that day.

The Married With Children reunion benefited the Race to Erase MS.

Weeks before the event, Applegate got emotional on her podcast while sharing her frustrations and fears about MS.

“I’m trying not to start being a crybaby again with every single thing that I’m reading, because I’m getting very emotional because I’m really touched by the fact that we’re all sitting in that space,” Applegate said after reading a letter from a fan battling myasthenia gravis (MG).

The podcaster continued, “Like yesterday, I was walking, kind of OK. … Today, I was falling over, stumbling. I just feel like, is it taking me? Is it taking me day by day, piece by piece? I can’t even read s*** like this without getting super highly triggered.”
